After you have signed up with the ad networks, you want to make sure that you master the process of properly targeting the audience for each campaign you run, using metrics like gender, age, race, household income, education level, marital status, etc.
Always make sure the demographics listed for your offers match those of the websites you are advertising on.
Quantcast is one of my favorite places to do demographic research (free). If you never use any other tool, make sure you are using this one. In addition to information about the main site, you can also get data on other websites visitors to the searched–‐for site are likely to be visiting, which can give you ideas for promotions or other similar sites to advertise on.
Google Ad Planner
Google Ad Planner is similar to Quantcast, but it draws on Google’s data (Quantcast, in my experience, however, is better overall). But if you are looking for some diversity in your market research resources, it’s a good place to look. You can find it at google.com/adplanner.
The Alexa rank of a site is a good overall measure of its traffic (the lower the Alexa traffic number, the better – any site with a number less than 100,000 has a lot of traffic). This is where Quantcast gets its traffic data, and you can also find demographic data and information on sites visited before and after the site you are looking at.
Geeze, I wish these guys had an affiliate program because the new feature that hit a few weeks back (I’m writing this at least), is just truly amazing. It combines the forces of Quantcast, Google Ad Planner, and Alexa. Nothing more to say but USE IT.
Compete.com offers site profiles with detailed breakdowns of unique visitors over time and other related information. If you sign up with Compete Pro, you can access more data for a fee. Don’t worry about paying for Compete information in the beginning, however. You can also use Compete’s “site tags” feature to get a quick overview of sites related to a particular broad market keyword like “dating” that are currently most popular, which can give you good leads on sites to promote with CPA offers.
